Sometimes, saving a child's life begins by empowering the mother.
At Keep Life Safe Foundation for the Less Privileged, we have witnessed a painful reality in many rural communities: children often become seriously ill, and in some cases lose their lives, not necessarily because treatment is impossible, but because families simply cannot afford basic healthcare expenses.
For many nursing mothers, the inability to provide adequate nutrition, medications, transportation to health facilities, or emergency care places both mother and child in vulnerable situations.
This reality moved us to act.
And from this concern, our Rural Maternity Support Care Programme was born.
The vision is simple but powerful: empower nursing mothers economically so they can better care for their children and families.
Currently, Keep Life Safe Foundation is supporting four nursing mothers in Umunumo, Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State by providing financial assistance to strengthen and sustain their small businesses.
Last week, our team visited these women to assess their progress.
Their stories were both encouraging and inspiring.
They testified that the support they received has significantly improved their businesses and helped them contribute more meaningfully to the wellbeing of their children and families.
For these mothers, this support is more than financial assistance.
It is dignity.
It is hope.
It is stability.
It is the ability to respond to their children's needs with greater confidence and less fear.
By the end of this month, Keep Life Safe Foundation looks forward to providing additional business support funds to these mothers to further strengthen their income-generating activities and improve the wellbeing of their families.
But our vision goes beyond four mothers.
There are many more nursing mothers in rural communities carrying the heavy responsibility of raising children with little or no financial support.
There are many infants whose wellbeing depends largely on whether their mothers can afford basic necessities and healthcare.
This is why we believe that supporting a nursing mother is also an investment in the life of a child.
